Length: approximately 248 pages
Original release: 2018
Genre/Categories: Nonfiction; U.S. history; War and peace; Political memoir
Franklin, a former Air Force navigator and later a prominent cultural historian, reflects on how his own life tracks the United States’ transformation from the “Good War” myth of World War II into an era of unending conflicts, from Korea and Vietnam to today’s “forever wars.” Drawing on firsthand experience flying classified missions and decades of scholarship, he argues that U.S. foreign policy has repeatedly justified intervention with deceptive narratives while exporting violence abroad and using similar tactics—surveillance, repression, militarized policing—against labor, civil rights, and antiwar movements at home. The book offers “hard‑learned lessons” for understanding how America arrived at its current state of permanent war, political disillusionment, and deep division, while honoring those who have long resisted this trajectory.
